By Dr Rangan Chatterjee
The book that I have chosen this month is The Stress Solution by Dr Rangan Chatterjee.
In the lead up to Christmas many of us being to feel stressed and overwhelmed by all of the things that we need to get done, so I hope that this book will encourage you to take a little timeout for yourselves.
The first page of the book states that up to 8% of GP consultations are thought to be somehow related to stress. So, during my work as a GP, I see a large number of patients with high levels of stress, which is having a huge impact on their physical and mental wellbeing, which is why this book really appealed to me as it takes you through managing stress using lifestyle measures.
I am a great fan of Dr Chatterjee as he has really spearheaded the lifestyle medicine approach in the UK. I attended his ‘Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine’ course in London and found it to be empowering and energising.
The book is broken down into four main sections; Purpose, Relationships, Body, Mind. I found the section on ‘Purpose’ to be really interesting as this is an area that often isn’t covered when we are talking about stress. Dr Chatterjee provides practical ideas that can be implemented in 10 minutes as part of our daily routine, such as; positive affirmations, the importance of a morning routine, gratitude and finding joy.
I particularly liked the section on the importance of gut health, as he describes the gut – brain axis clearly and advises on eating a diverse diet. Checklists and ideas listed as bullet points make all of his advice very accessible.
Dr Rangan Chatterjee is a pioneer in the emerging field of progressive medicine, and a leading voice in the lifestyle medicine movement. He is well known for his BBC TV show ‘Doctor in the House’, and his bestselling first book ‘The 4 Pillar Plan’, he is resident doctor on BBC Breakfast and hosts his own podcasts ‘Feel Better, Live More’.
